The Sugar Wife is Rough Magic’s fourth production of 2005 and is the first production of a new initiative by the company called Rough Magic Studio, dedicated to the ongoing development of new plays and new writers.
Rough Magic Studio is a stream-lined production model which will provide production opportunities for talented young directors and designers, who currently find it difficult to gain a foothold within existing professional theatres.
Rough Magic Studio productions will be presented in Project’s Cube performance space and will run for three weeks (including a production/preview week).
The SEEDS II Showcase, which was designed to seek out, enable, encourage and stage the work of young emerging writers and directors, scheduled for Project Cube in October 2005, will also be a Rough Magic Studio presentation.
Rough Magic Studio will allow the company to present innovative work to a committed and informed audience without exposing the company to the financial risk associated with a full-scale production.
This new model of production will also allow the company to be more fleet-footed and efficient in mounting revivals and tours of successful productions, both at home and abroad.
