Elizabeth Kuti's new play, The Sugar Wife, has been shortlisted for the prestigious Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, which will be announced in February 2006.
The Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, established in 1978, is given annually to a woman who deserves recognition for having written a work of outstanding quality for the English-speaking theatre. The Prize is administered in Houston, London and New York by a board of directors who choose six judges each year, three in the United States and three in Britain. The presentation ceremonies, which honor all finalists, are held in London, New York or Houston. Ten to twelve new plays are shortlisted for the prize each year.
The Prize currently awards $22,000 annually to the Finalists: Winner - $10,000, Special Commendation - $2,000, other Finalists - $1,000.
Rough Magic's production of The Sugar Wife played to sold-out houses at Dublin's Project Arts Centre in April 2005 and will transfer to London's Soho theatre for four weeks in January 2006.
