Gerald Murphy Wins Major Award

At a reception at the Abbey theatre yesterday, the playwright Gerald Murphy was awarded the 2004 Stewart Parker Trust Playwriting Bursary for his play Take Me Away.

Take Me Away was developed during the SEEDS New Writing Initiative (co-produced by Rough Magic and the Dublin Fringe Festival) and was premiered by Rough Magic at Project Arts Centre in March 2004 as part of the Rough Magic in Rep presentation.

Rough Magic's production of Take Me Away subsequently toured to the prestigious Heidelberger Stückmarkt in Heidelberg, Germany; to the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh where it received a Fringe First Award and to the Bush Theatre, London where it played for four weeks. New productions of the play in translation have recently been staged in Rome and Vienna.

Gerald Murphy is a Dublin based writer and actor. His first play, The Welcome, was staged by Druid Theatre Company in 2001 as part of their 'Druid Debuts' series. His first radio play, Stranger in the Night won a PJ O'Connor Award and was broadcast by RTÉ in 2001, and a radio version of Take Me Away was broadcast by RTÉ in 2002.
