"What it all comes down to is personal mobility...imagine a fleet of civic bikes...stacked on covered racks on the corner of every street...which anybody can ride anywhere, free of charge, inside the city centre."
Act I - Spokesong
The Lyric Theatre & Rough Magic present Spokesong as part of The Parker Project, a double bill of Stewart Parker's work.
In Spokesong the action takes place in Belfast during the early 1970s, and the eighty years preceding them. It is set in a Victorian bicycle shop, owned by Frank Stock, philosopher and dreamer, who believes in the regeneration of his native city through the miracle of the bicycle.
“When Stewart Parker wrote these plays, each at a particularly dark point in the Troubles, people thought he was crazy to imagine the possibility of progress or redemption in Northern Ireland. As it turns out, he was absolutely right and it now seems as if anything is possible. But with their emphasis on cycles in history and the dangers of failing to negotiate with the past, these deeply relevant plays act as both a warning and an inspiration.”
